HSU cyclist Justin Graves stood on the awards podium at Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships, having finished fourth overall among the Div. II men after competing in every event: the downhill, dual slalom, short track and cross country races. Graves beat out the fifth place omnium holder by one point. Shows how close the racing was during three days of intense national championships at Angel Fire Ski Resort in New Mexico.
It’s unusual for a rider to compete in all disciplines at Nationals. “You rarely see the same racer in gravity and endurance events, especially at this level,” said Vicky Sama, HSU Cycling Club faculty adviser and coach. “Gravey is just an amazing all-around rider. He excels at every type of mountain bike race.”
Graves finished 6th in Saturday’s downhill, only hundreds of a second shy of fourth and fifth place. He finished 8th in Sunday’s dual slalom, 26th in the short track (just before racing in the downhill) and still earned points for getting across the line in 41st place in Friday’s cross country race after changing two flat tires.
Graves’ teammates Steven Pearl and Jesse Palmer also had impressive finishes– competing in the cross country and short track races. You can find full results for the national championships at USA Cycling.
