Why HSU Cycling is primed for our best season yet

By Luke Ramseth

It’s been awhile since we’ve posted here. Our apologies. Since our home mountain bike race last fall, we took home another conference championship in mountain biking, snagged third overall at DII nationals in Angel Fire, New Mexico, and Matt Schiff won a national championships in the XC race and the overall omnium.

Our mountain bikers officially put Humboldt on the collegiate cycling map. But let’s get back to the present. Springtime means it’s the roadies’ turn for some glory.

This winter, we’ve been busy assembling the most formidable HSU road team the West Coast Collegiate Cycling Conference has ever seen. We have fresh talent–some young guns that will undoubtedly rocket up through the collegiate ranks–along with a nice mix of grizzled, grumpy and experienced veterans. We have more A category men and women than ever before. We’re hopeful we can send a full team to road nationals in Ogden, Utah in May, a first. We’ve also got some killer leadership this semester. Between our pep-talking, always-strategizing coach and faculty advisor Vicky Sama, and our uber-organized behind-the-scenes president Justin Graves, this team is ready to take the next big step.

This season we’re also hosting–for the second year in a row–a collegiate and elite road race, team time trial and criterium right here in Humboldt County on March 24-25. Mark your calendars and come spectate or race it. Look for a more complete race preview and flyer to come soon.

We’re sending a big squad to the first big race of the season this weekend at Stanford. Check back here (more often now) for results, race reports and photos. You can also keep an eye out for results at the http://wccc-info.com/ website. We also update our Facebook more frequently, so keep an eye on that.
