HSU finished strong in women’s and men’s races this weekend at UC Berkeley, pulling away with top-ten finishes and points in well-attended events.
Ryan “The Diesel” Spaulding placed 5th in Saturday’s road race after breaking away with a few riders up the brutal McEwen Road hill. He finished 10th in Sunday’s criterium, missing out on a five-man breakaway dominated by UC Davis after getting stuck behind a crash in the second lap. His chase group at one point was 24 seconds behind the break but recovered more than half that time with hard pulls from Spaulding and Cal team riders.
HSU women racked in the points in Saturday’s road race. Traci Kroll surged at the line to get 2nd place in the Women’s B race while teammate Jamie Lira finished 7th in a field of 16 racers. In the Women’s C race, Martina Glaros finished 8th followed by Elena Dolitsky in 9th in a field of 17 riders.
Lira powered to 4th place in Sunday’s criterium in downtown Berkeley after scoring three primes in the Women’s B field. Kroll finished 6th, and Dolitsky got 7th in the Women’s C crit.
HSU’s Men’s C squad has grown to 5 as more of our riders move up in the categories. In Saturday’s road race, Steven Pearl finished an impressive 5th place, Josh Schultz got 15th and Nate Abel got 20th out of a field of 51 riders. Tim Davidson finished 26th and Steve Allen finished 29th– both men racing the C category for the first time.
On Sunday, Pearl shined again with a 6th place finish in the downtown crit, followed by teammate Schultz in 7th place. Nate Abel took some hard pulls during the race to help protect his teammates and finished 19th. Davidson rode a strong race and finished 17. Allen got 23rd.
The Men’s D field was one of the largest of the day on Saturday– 54 riders strong. Robert Combs helped his teammate Kristoffer Dean finish the race– Dean’s first bike race ever. Kudos.
And finally, Sunday’s downtown crit included a traditional alumni race that included about a dozen riders who graduated from UC Davis, Berkeley, Sac State and Humboldt (some who have since turned pro– ouch!). Evan Gibbs, Vicky Sama, Jorge Ramirez and Josh Schultz wore their HSU colors (Sama had on her CU Boulder jersey and HSU shorts)… and raced the back downhill turn at mock speeds. Sama won the HSU prime and will bring the goodies to this weekend’s race for all to enjoy.
