Today started with an hour long drive from Watsonville to San Jose. And sure enough just in time for the start, it started raining. Again. Today, we decided to set up shop on Sierra Road, a monster of a climb that comes just 8 miles into the stage.
It was an incredible view of San Jose from the top. And soon after we got there, the race was already coming by. Set up the video camera quickly, and started rolling.
A small breakaway was the first group to come by, followed by 3 main groups that had already broken apart on the steeps of Sierra. Lance and Astana was pushing the pace of the main group, and it was having an effect. Riders were dropping of the back left and right. It reminded me of the old Postal Service days on the Tour de France climbs.
Back in Watsonville later that day, Nate mapped out a ride for me that took me through his stomping grounds of Santa Cruz County. I have to come here to ride more often.
Tomorrow I’m planning on riding some of the Stage 4 course.
Highlights of the day: The vibe of fans on Sierra Rd, everybody was stoked despite the cold rain. Watching Lance and the boys dominate. A sweet ride.
