Congratulations to HSU Cycling Club for winning the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference Div. II Championships for yet another season! The team raced well in both in Saturday’s road race in Hollister and Sunday’s criterium in Morgan Hill at the conference championships hosted by Stanford University this weekend.
Congratulations to Ryan Spaulding for being crowned the well-deserved overall Div. II omnium men’s champion and to Traci Kroll for winning the Div. II women’s omnium. They each received a medal and a lucite championship star. Ben Barry finished second place in the omnium, which means all three will get the honor of being called to the front of the start line at the National Collegiate Cycling Championships in Madison, Wisc. in May. That will give them a good start place over the hundred or so cyclists in their field. That’s super cool!
Awesome racing this weekend by Josh Schultz who survived flipping over bushes and finished with the pack in the wicked-fast Men’s B crit; Nate Abel who kicked butt in the road race and proved in the crit that rabbit ears can be aerodynamic; Michael Malocha and Gianpaul Ferioli for putting the hammer down in the crit and getting 4th and 5th places; Tim Davidson who was aggressive and in excellent position in the Men’s C crit; Jamie Lira for winning a crit prime in Women B and for convincing her parents to house the team; Joseph Lamb who experienced his first and last collegiate race… and finished; and Kristoffer Dean who had way too much fun flying downhill in the road race and is always a cheerleader for his teammates.
The team and our riders won in Div. II but also finished impressively among the Division I schools, so check out the full race results and overall points on the WCCC website: http://www.wccc-info.com/
If you didn’t seem them already, check out the live race updates I posted yesterday and pics on the Humboldt State Cycling Club facebook site. Videos of all crit finishes will be posted soon.
What a great way to end the regional collegiate cycling season! Best of luck to Ryan, Ben and Traci as they represent HSU at national championships in two weeks.
Thanks to all of our riders who participated in races this semester and your families and friends who came out and supported you these past weeks. Thanks also to Evan Gibbs who was extremely valuable with helping the team at the races and to Moose for being such a cycling lover and calming our nerves when we need it most.
Don’t forget we have the Tour of the Unknown Coast, another meeting and a post-season party to plan!
Big hugs,
Vicky
